Brenda Perez describes how her family values led her to create a culture of caring through volunteer work.

My family is large, and there was always a sense of sharing. Even if you just had half of something you can cut that up into quarters and share it with another person.

And I think in Nashville I’ve been able to have the opportunities to cultivate that in different ways. In 2006, I started to get involved in community work, and that’s how I came to Workers Dignity, where I am and supporting low-wage workers – people who live in Nashville and work in Nashville but don’t get paid by their bosses.

I work with a lot of women and young mothers to help them restore their dignity and claim their paychecks, and the time they spent away from their families. And that’s been very strong and grounding work, and we’ve really built a community of people here in Nashville who are standing up for [these workers].
